This week, the topic that our hygienist wants to discuss is C-reactive protein(CRP).

CRP is a marker of inflammation in the body. Gum disease has been shown to trigger the liver to increase the production of C-reactive protein. The inflammation that it causes effects the inside lining of blood vessels which lead to hardening of the arteries which, in turn, can cause blockages of these vessels leading to a heart attack or stroke.

Studies show that lower concentrations or CRP were associated with a longer life span.

Poor oral hygiene has been linked to elevated levels of CRP and non flossers had a 30% higher risk of shortened lifespan. With just a little bit of effort, and dental floss, you can increase your chances at a longer life!
